Patrick O'Reilly was born in Kilkenny in 1957. He studied at the Belfast College of Art in 1975/76.
He produces bronzes with a kind of dreamlike, surreal exactitude. He is perfectly at home in his wide variations of scale and has even constructed a street sculpture in Dublin, which he calls the 'Rockets' that is fifty feet high. In his work there is an underlying note of social compassion and identification with the lonely, and the unwanted people of society. And from a certain angle, O'Reilly can also be seen as one of the creators of a new kind of folk culture and street mythology. He draws from contemporary imagery ranging from fair ground figures to horror comics, but there is a humour and imaginative freedom in his approach.
