Robert Ballagh

Robert Ballagh represented Ireland at the 1969 Paris Biennale and among the theatre sets he has designed are those for Riverdance.

He has also designed over 70 Irish postage stamps and the last series of Irish banknotes before the introduction of the Euro.

Ballagh is recognised for his imaginative and hyper-realistic renderings of well known literary, historical or establishment figures. In the evolution of his art, in moving from abstraction to figurative, he introduced the figure first as a silhouette or 'cut-out', then as a heavily outlined, painted figure (as in his pastiches of Goya, Delacroix, Poussin or Ingres).
